GENERAL INFORMATIONS

ABOUT ORLANDO

ORLANDO is an opera of a new kind, a performative installation made of seven videos projected on screens fixed on a heptagonal wooden structure.

ORLANDO can be presented indoors or outdoors.

ORLANDO can be shared with audiences in two ways :

- As a video-sound installation without live performance (24/24h if the set device is placed in a dark space or during night time if the set device is placed in a bright space or outdoors)

- As a performative installation (50min) during which a guest-musician or sound artist plays live and performs inside the set device, in immersion together with the audience. Each presentation of ORLANDO is preceded by a short introduction (5min) by Julie Beauvais and followed by a discussion (30 to 60min) between the artists and the audience. Guest-researchers, philosophers, speakers, thinkers, activists are invited to participate to the after-talks related to individual and collective post-binary evolutions.

INDOORS / OUTDOORS SETTING

- Indoors version : 24/24h if the set device is placed in a dark space or during night time if the set device is placed in a bright space.

- Outdoors version : before sunrise or after sunset. The environnement should be as quiet and dark as possible. Prefer locations far from roads, airports, lampposts and other light sources. ORLANDO cannot be installed or performed in conditions of wind or rain.

SPACE AND DIMENSIONS

Minimum necessary dimension of the venue:

Option 1 (ideal version, quicker set up, more audience capacity)

- 19m x 19m (360m2)

- Rear-projection : video projectors are placed around the set device, on the floor

- The ground surface has to be plane. Favor dry spaces and shielded from the wind. Avoid dusty and muddy places.

Option 2 (possible version, longer set up, less audience capacity)

- 14m x 14m (196m2)

- Front-projection (video projectors hung inside the set device)

- Beamers must be hung to a grid, at the center of the set, 2,5m above the ground.

DURATION OF INSTALLATION AND PERFORMANCE

- Video-sound installation can be played 24/24h if the environment is dark enough.

- Live performance lasts from 80 to 110 minutes (depending on the length of the after-talks). It can be played any time in an indoor dark environment and only before dawn or after dusk in an outdoor setting.

AUDIENCE AND CAPACITY

- 70 people can fit inside the structure. Depending on the size of the venue, a larger audience can walk in and out the structure and sit outside and around the structure.

- The audience members are free to change points of view, walk in and around the structure during the installation visit and during the live performance.

- Audience members generally sit and lie down on the floor inside and around the structure.

- If the floor is not clean, warm and dry, the organiser is asked to provide carpets or pillows for the audience.

- Chairs can be spread around the structure only (not inside the structure), for disabled members of the audience.

SECURITY

- Set device and material should be secured 24/24h in an indoor or outdoor version.

SET DEVICE

ABOUT THE SET DEVICE

The set device is made of a heptagonal wooden structure (ø :13,5m) within which the audience can enter by 7 doors arranged between the screens.

The 7 screens of 3,85m x 2,6m are made of white PVC. They are fixed on the structure with white ropes.

The structure is ballasted by concrete blocks specifically done and disposed at the 7 access doors. A tight cable on all the upper structure’s perimeter allows to stiffen the whole installation. Beamers and media-players are placed in front of each screen (3,5m away).

If the set device cannot be transported by truck from the previous venue, it has to be rebuild locally.

PRE-SET UP IN CARPENTRY WORKSHOP

Rebuilding the elements of the set:

- Pre-assemble time : 7 days, 3 people (depending on the available tools and the know-how)

- Carpentry workshop

- Wood : 600 linear meters, batten 6x3cm

- Hadware : detailed list in the assembly plan

- Concrete ballasts : build minimum 5 shapes for concrete pouring, detail in the assembly plan. 7 ballasts for indoors version. 21 ballasts for outdoors version.
